Scholarships

This golden era for sport at Sydney University has been anchored by the Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) Elite Athlete Program.

The very first Sydney Uni sporting scholar was none other than SUBC’s David Hynes, who graduated with an Economics/Law degree before gaining selection as an Australian Baseball Olympian at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Sydney University Baseball Club offers unique opportunities that are unavailable at the majority of other clubs in Sydney.

Athletes can receive a range of benefits, depending on the scholarship type*, including:

  • Financial assistance ($1,000+ per year) and international travel grants

  • Access to gym, pool and batting facility

  • Sports science services (eg nutrition, mental health, sleep)

  • Academic advice & advocacy

Eligible Candidates must:

  • Be undertaking/enrolling in tertiary studies at Sydney University

  • Represent Sydney University in baseball

Current and prospective Sydney Uni Students who play for Sydney Uni Baseball Club will be assisted in scholarship applications. More info about pathways to studying at Sydney University can be found here. There are also a non-sporting scholarship opportunities through the university, to assist those who have undergone hardship or those who are top academic performers in specific fields. Info here.

Undergraduate applicants can apply for admission into a course with an ATAR of up to five points below the regular cut-off through the Elite Athletes and Performers Scheme.

Applications close in December for each university year.

Elite Athlete Program

For over a century, sport has been an integral component of the student experience at The University of Sydney - boasting more than 300 Australian representatives, including 115 Olympians and more than 100 Wallabies. Since its inception in 1990, the Elite Athlete Program has become a leader in the provision of services to elite athletes.

Excellence in sport is integral to Sydney University’s rich history and diverse identity. From international to intervarsity-level sport; Sydney University is well-represented in the winner’s circle.

Helping Sydney University sports clubs to comprehensively support elite athletes striving for brilliance in sport and academia is fundamental to this success. Since 1990, Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) has provided scholarships and the Elite Athlete Program to assist Sydney University student athletes to excel.

Baseball Perpetual Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of club legends, alumni and members, Baseball has multiple perpetual named scholarships which can be awarded annually to student athletes to support their academic and sporting achievements.

Ron Rushbrooke Scholarship

The Ron Rushbrooke trust originated as a bequest from the estate of alumnus Mr Ron Rushbrooke in 2004, the Club's centenary year. Its vision is to ensure the perpetual viability of baseball at Sydney University.
 

David Hynes Scholarship

David was an explosive power hitter and the recipient of the first ever sports scholarship awarded by Sydney University. He represented Australia at the 1996 Olympics and currently serves as Chairman of Baseball Australia.

Ron & Jennie Finlay Scholarship

Ron was a 1st Grade Premiership, Intervarsity and NSW catcher in the 1970/80's, long-serving SUBC President, and ABF Chairman. Ron currently serves on the Board of the WBSC.

Jennie was a tireless contributor, scorer and organiser of everything on and off the field. The Jennie Finlay Award is named in her honour, annually given to the best young student baseballer.

Vance Borland Scholarship

Vance Borland was a baseballer and is a 1963 Arts and Social Science graduate of The University of Sydney.

To be awarded for the first time in 2023, the Vance Borland Scholarship will assist a current student of The University of Sydney who plays baseball and has experienced significant financial disadvantage throughout the course of their enrolment at University, and/or for first-year University students during their NSW HSC (or equivalent) year.

Ideally this Scholarship will be used to help successful candidates with covering the financial costs associated with representing Sydney University in the baseball competition at the UniSport Nationals.
